Description: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are any organic compounds that have an initial boiling point less than or equal to 250°C (482°F) when measured at a standard atmospheric pressure of
101.3 kPa. VOCs are a mixture of light end hydrocarbons (such as methane, ethane, propane or butane) that evaporate within the range of normal atmospheric conditions. VOCs are generated when cargo flashes in the piping system from the source to the cargo tanks, and from evaporation from the oil surface inside the cargo oil tanks during and after loading. During loading of crude oil tankers and the subsequent vessel transit, VOCs may be released to the atmosphere together with the inert gas.
