For my father, Hewitt Schrader Morris (1905-1973), it was by becoming a ship’s wireless operator or “Sparks,” and sailing around the world for five years on ten different merchant ships. During his time at sea, he wrote many letters back home, enthusiastically describing the details of his adventures while on board ship and at the many ports he visited. I have transcribed those letters which were handwritten (later letters were typed) for easier reading, but have left my father’s original spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other “mistakes” intact in order to preserve his writing style. Although my father also wrote letters to other relatives besides his immediate family (mother, father, and sister Julia), I decided not to include these for reasons of redundancy. I also decided to publish a series of nine books based upon the ten individual ships that he sailed on (the first book also covers his short service on the Pennsylvanian). The original handwritten letters can also be found in the appendix of each book following the transcription; otherwise, copies of only the original typed letters are provided. The introduction of each book also includes facts on the steamships themselves, and black & white photos taken by my father are scattered throughout the books. Additional info: About the author: Kent Morris was born in Manhasset, Long Island, NY in 1952 and the family moved out to Southern California in 1961. He published his first book, "The Historical Development and Contemporary Perspective of the Japanese Urasenke Way of Tea as Practiced in California," an ethnography, in 2003. His ebook series, "Letters from the Sea," based on his father's letters written home while serving in the merchant marines during the 1920's, was published in 2014. Mr. Morris has been an adjunct professor of anthropology for the last twenty years at both CSU, Fullerton and Long Beach City College. He enjoys travel, hiking, bicycling, boating, the movies, the beach, and wine-tasting.
