In 1861, Harriet Lane took part in the attempt to relieve Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, when that vital position was besieged by Confederate forces. While so engaged, she fired the first US Navy shot of the Civil War, firing across the bow of the steamer Nashville.
