At 0014 hours on 8 June the Japanese submarine I-24, under the command of Commander Hiroshi Hanabusa, surfaced off the NSW coast and fired 10 high explosive 140-mm artillery rounds into the densely populated eastern suburbs of Sydney. Further north, I-21, under the command of Commander Matsumura Kanji, surfaced in Stockton Bight at 0215 hours and over 23 minutes fired 21 rounds on Newcastle. Not all of these shells contained high explosives, the others being star shells designed to illuminate targets. From a military perspective the outcome of these bombardments was essentially ineffective. Few of the shells actually exploded, no significant damage was caused in either city, and the few casualties were only slightly wounded. Subsequently, and very quickly, these raids were pushed aside by military officials and the media, but within the community they gave rise to a wide range of anecdotes, many of which have developed into urban myths-with a strong emphasis on the last word. There has been some journalistic interest in the Sydney raid, but not enough, while the Newcastle bombardment has received scant attention. This, too, is about to change. At the time they first met, neither of the authors of this book had any intention of researching the shelling of Sydney and Newcastle.
