Description: This well-written book details the events surrounding the "breakout" of the German ships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Prinz Eugen from the French port of Brest back to Germany, going straight through the narrow English Channel in broad daylight. The British were caught totally off-guard and, apart from a few valiant but suicidal attacks by a handful of planes and a few ships, the German ships sailed right under the cliffs of Dover and back to Germany practically unscathed. The event mortified and embarrassed the sea-going British and gave a boost to German morale at a time that their fortunes were firmly changing against them.
