A fire that started in the engine room of the container ship Cap Blanche at Vancouver’s Fraser Surrey Docks on July 12 could keep the 2,741 vessel in Vancouver at least until July 22, according to container line ANL. The engine room was damaged and will require extensive repairs. ANL’s early estimate is that the vessel will depart on July 22, however, a more detailed damage assessment is required. The fire started after the 2006-built Cap Blanche completed its unloading, and was quickly put out. There have been no reported injuries or spills. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has deployed a team to investigate the cause of the accident. A spokesperson for the docks told the local media that a small fuel spill had caused the fire. Cap Blanche is operated by Harmstorf Thomas Meier-Hedde of Germany, and is currently deployed on ANL’s WC USA Canada Australia NZ Tahiti Service. ANL said that Tacoma/Oakland and Long Beach cargo remained on board and will discharge direct into these ports once repairs have been carried out.
