Unforgivable: The Story of a Maritime Disaster Waiting to Happen
Year: 2014 Language: english Author: C.P. Davies Edition: Kindle Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 29 Description: In nineteen seventy six an unnamed coastal freighter left Cardiff Docks en route for a port on the south coast of England. It had no cargo and had not taken on any ballast so was riding high in the water, rolling and creaking with every wave that came its way. The thousand ton ship was registered under a flag of convenience which was a device used by its owners to avoid paying tax and other financial charges and meant that it was obliged to obey any other restrictive maritime regulations. It was ill maintained and, in common parlance, a 'rust bucket', hardly sea worthy and a serious and unforgivable risk to its crew and other ships. An Atlantic storm had come charging in from the West and caught them as they rounded Land's End. There was no May Day call for help and the only identifiable life boat was washed up on the coast of Cornwall several weeks later. No bodies were ever found. The ship thus joined the hundreds of others that had foundered in this part of the world, the earlies recorded casualties being the 'Richard and John' and her pirated prize the 'Bandera' from Virginia in 1783. The most recent incident was a landing craft which filled with water, the crew being rescued by the RNLI and coastguard rescue helicopter in 2017. Without a doubt it will not be the last. Additional info: Book 1 of the ‘Captain’ Trilogy. This short story, based on a series of true events, is a first hand detailed account of a sea passage which took place several years ago when the electronic navigational aid called Global Positional System was new and not readily available. Sometimes it’s funny, but mostly it’s alarming, especially as it’s still – to a certain extent – true today.
