It was for this reason that the Governing Body of the ILO decided at its 259th Session (March 1994) to convene a meeting of experts in Geneva from 23 to 31 January 1995, to consider a draft code of practice on the management of alcohol- and drug related problems at the workplace. The practical recommendations of this code of practice are intended to provide guidance to all those who have responsibility for addressing alcohol- and drug-related problems at the workplace. The code is not intended to replace international standards, national laws, regulations or other accepted standards. Alcohol and drug policies and programmes should apply to all staff, managers and employees and should not discriminate on grounds of race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin.
