Float Your Boat!: The Evolution and Science of Sailing
Year: 2009 Language: english Author: Mark Denny Genre: Encyclopedia Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 278 Description: The large and growing library of sailing literature is divided into two broad categories: books that appear to be written by engineers for America’s Cup boat-builders, and books that have been written by experienced boat-handlers who want to pass on their experience to weekend sailors. Books in the first category will tell you about the strength-to-weight ratio of synthetic running-rigging lines or the optimum sail angle-ofattack to avoid separation bubbles. The emphasis is on sailing as fast as possible, reflecting an increasing emphasis on yacht racing. Books in the second category will tell you about dinghy maintenance, boat electrics, the fundamentals of boat handling, and nautical etiquette—emphasizing the practicalities that must be mastered by every recreational sailor. There seems to be something of a gap in the literature, which this book aims to fill. Books in both of the categories that I have outlined (parodied, some would say, because I am exaggerating the types to make my point) pay only nodding attention to the evolution of sailing craft and the technological or scientific reasons for this evolution. This history is interesting, and is a significant part of the story that I tell in the pages to follow. History sets our modern sailing vessels in context: there are imperative historical and technological reasons why large sailing ships and small sailing boats evolved in the way that they did.
