Description: This classic textbook provides information on shipboard deck practices, procedures and organization in the U.S. Navy.
Seamanship: Fundamentals for the Deck Officer is designed to introduce the student to some of the basic
knowledge required of a naval officer. The midshipman or officer candidate must acquire and demonstrate many
of the skills described in this text early in his or her career.
Although intended as a revision of the Seamanship volume originally developed as part of the Fundamentals
of Naval Science series, this text highlights and expands upon those elements of seamanship most helpful to
the midshipmen and officer candidates preparing for their first at-sea cruise. The role of the enlisted seaman
and his responsibilities aboard a small combatant are woven throughout the book despite its orientation toward
officer education. It is hoped that Seamanship may continue to serve the student long after commissioning by
forming the beginning of an officer’s professional library.
