Description: September 1, 1985. The RMS Titanic, which has been missing since April 15, 1912, is found in the North Atlantic where it lies at a depth of 3,821 metres. Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a commander in the French Navy, directed underwater research of part of many expeditions to the wreck, from 1987 until his untimely death in 2023.
Three scribbled words in the Nautile’s logbook to express the indescribable. The bow of the Titanic had just appeared in our submersible’s searchlights. Instantly, the cabin fell silent. Guy Sciarrone, Max Dubois and I had been exchanging information for the last hour and a half of our descent to the bottom, but no one had said a word for a good ten minutes. Before our eyes rose the incredibly spectacular view of the wreck: the foredeck, with winches and anchor chains, still in place seventy-five years later. The scene was startling. At this depth, marine life is minimal. No rippling seaweed, no carpet of sponges, no gorgonians or multicoloured corals to mask the scrap metal. The only hints of colour were the rusticles – rusty stalactites produced by microorganisms – whose orange colour contrasted with the grey veil of marine sediment and the absolute blackness of the water.
