Description: The Battle of Jutland was the biggest naval encounter of WWI and was at a time when Britain boasted the biggest fleet of any navy. The Germans, slowly being throttled by a blockade, were desperate to break it but to do so had to lure the Royal Navy Grand Fleet into a trap to be destroyed piecemeal. While the German forces could claim a tactical victory, having lost fewer ships and only half as many men, it was a clear strategic victory for the British, as the Germans failed to break the blockade and scurried back to port, never to challenge the Royal Navy again.
There are three other nautical features this month as well. Firstly, one for those collecting from the battle, secondly, a follow up to last month’s piece about Nelson’s Navy. This time it’s the men and recruiting that we are looking at. And lastly, from WWII, the E-Boat War Badge comes under scrutiny.
