The first edition of this publication had its origins in the course notes devised and drafted by Graham McGuire and Barry White ofthe Hazardous Cargo Handling Unit, Leith Nautical College, UK (the forerunner of The Centre for Advanced Maritime Studies, Edinburgh), to whom the Society express its sincere gratitude. In the sixteen years since this publication was last updated the liquefied gas shipping and terminal industry has undergone considerable change. This revision reflects these changes which include, but are not limited to, vessel design, propulsion systems, size of fleet, floating regasification and reliquefaction, Arctic LNG, containment systems, efficiency increases in vessel operations, vessel capacities, technology, best practice and legislation. It is recommended that a copy of this publication be kept -and used -on board every gas tanker and in every terminal to provide advice on operational procedures and the shared responsibility for safe and efficient operations.
