Description: Genoa began to establish itself as a naval and commercial power around the 11th century, competing for hegemony over the sea with Pisa and Venice. One of the main clashes focused on the political and commercial control of Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily. The duel with Venice had the East as its theater, and will reach the Adriatic. The possessions of Genoa were mainly commercial colonies, cities or districts inhabited by merchants administered by a consul. This book focuses on the Republic of Genoa, on its maritime power and its economic relations in the Mediterranean. The choice of the Republic of Genoa states an observation point on the Mediterranean world and the changing relationship between that world and the rest of Europe in a period of sweeping transformations. This study fills a gap in English and american historiography, usually more attentive to other Italian realities, such as Venice or Florence.
