Description: At the end of the war, many of the ships on order were cancelled. Of those that remained, many continued in service with the U.S. Navy. However, a large number were also transformed to allied and other friendly navies. By the 1970’s some 300 were still in active service, though most of them had received improved weapons. During this period, several Sumner and Gearing, particularly the latter, were modernized through FRAM (Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization) programs, which added a good ten years to their service life.A lot of these ended their service in countries with navies linked to the
USA, such as Korea, Spain, Greece, Mexico, Taiwan and Turkey. Some are still being used today.
