Some of the exercises require detailed knowledge that needs ‘swotting up’ beforehand – which is where this book comes in. We have tried to help by looking for the logic as well as the facts, and eliminating unnecessary information to concentrate on the essentials of the RYA syllabus. In each of the main sections – navigation, weather, safety and seagoing practice – we have tried to do four things: • Provide all the essential information. • Organise it in a digestible form that makes learning and revision easier – in fact, the book is small enough to slip in your pocket to skim through in the lunch hour, on the train home or just before going into the exam. • Advise on exam tactics. • Set all this in a practical seagoing perspective. This edition also contains a completely new chapter on using electronic charts and updated material on software and apps for weather forecasting and tides, as well as on safety, explaining the latest developments in fast-changing technology and how this affects seagoing practice. In particular, it addresses the vital issues of how far sailors can, or should, rely on electronic rather than traditional methods. The RYA training scheme operates at five main levels – Competent Crew, Day Skipper/Watch Leader, Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean. Courses cover all of these with practical exams for the last three. The shore-based course we are concerned with here is a combined one, for Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore candidates. The syllabus is set out in RYA booklets, for sail and power. To obtain the final Offshore qualification, or ‘certificate of competence’, you must first log 50 days at sea, covering 2500 miles, including at least five 60-mile passages, and also hold a radio operator’s certificate and a first aid certificate. Five of the 50 days must be as skipper, and of the five longer passages two must be overnight and two as skipper. The practical exam, for which you may need to provide the boat, lasts 8–12 hours, and aims to show that you can competently skipper a cruising yacht up to 150 miles offshore.
