IMI has, some years ago, carried out a major research project. The project was financially supported by the Norwegian Research Council as well as by organizations like the Federation of Norwegian Industries, Marine Div. and the Association of Norwegian Maritime Exporters. It aims at developing solutions enabling suppliers to provide product specifications that customers may import directly in their outline- or building specifications. The major consequence for our customers is the change in how products are classified. Historically, products have been connected to one group only. We experienced that products had to be duplicated in order to be located via a multiple product groups. In addition to that, product groups have represented a “mixture” of products, some of them being solely component based (i.e. “cranes”), whereas others have been system based (e.g. “deck machinery”), and others representing a combination (e.g. “deck cranes”). This resulted in a large number of product groups.
